Conscience– is God’s gift that helps us know right from

                                     wrong.

The Celebration of the Sacrament of Penance has several parts:

  1. Contrition
  • We are sorry for our sins and firmly intend not to sin again.
  • We pray the Act of Contrition

  1. Confession
  • Telling our sins to the priest.
  1. Penance
  • Penance is a prayer or action that shows we are sorry or our sins.
  1. Absolution
  • The priest gives this to us.
  • It is God’s forgiveness of our sins through the actions and words of the priest.

Two Ways the Church Celebrates Penance

  1. Celebrating with the Community
  • We sing an opening hymn and the  priest greets us
  • The priest prays an opening prayer.
  • We listen to a reading from the Bible and homily.
  • We examine our conscience.
  • We pray an Act of Contrition.
  • We may say a prayer or sing a song and then pray the Our Father.
  • I meet individually with the priest.
  • I confess my sins.
  • The priest talks to me about loving God and others. He gives me penance.
  • The priest extends his hand and give me absolution.

  1. Celebrating Individually
  • I examine my conscience before meeting with the priest.
  • The priest greets me.
  • I make the sign of the cross.
  • The priest asks me to trust in God’s mercy.
  • The priest or I may read something from the Bible.
  • I meet individually with the priest.
  • I confess my sins.
  • The priest talks to me about loving God and others.
  • He gives me penance.
  • I pray an Act of Contrition.
  • Together the priest and I give thanks to God for his forgiveness.

Question to think about?

What do we do when we examine our conscience?  We ask ourselves whether or not we have loved God, others, and ourselves.  We think about things we have done, and whether they were right or wrong.
